Another resurrected classic.

Roller coaster tycoon zoom 2

In its day, RollerCoaster Tycoon was a pretty awesome game. Of course, the “Tycoon” game field was not saturated yet, and Railroad Tycoon II was still king. But even when its sequel came and went, and the field was pretty darn soggy, there was just something addictive about the series. All of the expansions and deluxe editions enjoyed long runs on the bestseller lists, and were highly endorsed by all of the “family friendly” organizations that boycott stuff like Grand Theft Auto.

If or when you heard about Roller Coaster Tycoon 3, the first thing you probably thought was, “Oh. Just more of the same, only in 3D.” Well, you’d be partially right, as the main concept hasn’t really changed, but added features and enhancements help it continue to shine, and its still-superb gameplay model might convince you that thinking about the original “In its day…” may not give it enough credit.

The first thing to notice, besides all the 3D eye candy, is that they’ve overhauled the interface and installed a task-specific hub — a much cleaner and simpler approach. There are hundreds of different small guests, or “peeps,” with over 50 different facial expressions, in all shapes and sizes, and all bigger than the previous ones that seemed about eight-pixels-high. Looking like bright animated Colorforms, the peeps roam through the park, some with really silly-looking, hand-waving, run animations, some with immense blue or green afros, and some teenagers doing their stuff. With all of the detail the camera zoom-control affords, it’s almost like being there.

Of course there’s a sandbox mode, as well as an extensive campaign with three objective-based difficulty levels per scenario — Apprentice, Entrepreneur, and Tycoon. They’ve also added dynamic speed control (the lack of which has been very frustrating in the past) and eliminated most time limits. You won’t be forced to make an inefficient park just to meet some objective, but there will be ‘intermediate objectives’ you’ll have to contend with, in both random and non-random situations. An example of a random situation would be a heat wave, which would necessitate things like extra liquid-refreshment stands, more shaded areas, aerosol deodorant in the vending machines; and a non-random one might be something like preparing for a high-school graduation night, where you’d want to make everything very student-friendly.

You’ll still build with the traditional grid system, but several new tools will really facilitate the process. There’s an “averaging” tool, which takes your grid placement and extrapolates its position over topographically variant terrain. In other words, it’s easier to build on hills. There’s also “auto-complete,” which connects various design points without your having to worry about making them actually “meet.” The biggest new feature in RollerCoaster Tycoon 3, of course, is the ability to view your coaster rides via first-person – a feature that was asked for since the first game appeared.

You can expect all of the old standby coaster types, including hanging coasters, as well as some newer ones, such as huge, monster, mega-tacular “giga-coasters,” and specialties like racing roller coasters, or “dueling” coasters that share the same grid (but not the same track) where cars meet one another as though in a joust. In addition to the looping, twisting, corkscrewing, death-on-stilts coaster rides, there are many other kinds of rides and attractions like Giant Concentrically Spinning Teacups, Ferris Wheels, Water Flumes, Hyperslides, and Laser Tag facilities.

Explore RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 for long enough, you’ll find a brilliantly simple design that’s also jam-packed with intricate gameplay for the build/business sim enthusiast.

  • Has so much potiential!

    By Catch22skadude
I love this game so much on my Ipad. I first got into RCT back at the orginial game and I hadn't played the games since I was a kid. So i bought RCT 3 on my Ipad and the graphics are steller!!! I decided I wanted to have the same game on my brand new Macbook Pro 15inch 2018. I was shocked that the game looks as horrible and plays terribly vs the Ipad version. If this gets fixed, I would give this game 5 stars!!! But for now, no one deserves to play an awfully made 64 bit version of this game. It needs updating. Please make the changes so that I and the rest of your fans can play the game we all love!
  • game doesnt open

  • I wish I never updated the game

    2
This used to be my favorite app on my 27” iMac. I used to play this game all the time and build parks. My mac has a good processor and 16GB of ram. With the new update, everything changed in an instant. The newest update makes the fullscreen gameplay lag as if I had a cheap mac with a cheap processor and little ram. If I keep the game quality settings very low which removes the scenery when zooming out, the lag goes away but there are still annoying lines that come and go when moving up and down. It almost makes the game unplayable. I might as well buy the CD and run it on a used PC laptop with Windows XP rather than deal with this new update. Unless I were to use a standard 12” monitor that was popular when the game was released back in 2004 or run the app on a Macbook, running RollerCoasert Tycoon 3 fullscreen mode on a big 27” monitor is way too much for my eyes. That is why I always ran the app in window mode. Things were fine using window mode and there was no lag. I could even record my gameplay. With the new update, window mode is gone! I cannot play the game in fullscreen with my large display, I need the window mode back! I am not buying a small monitor just for one app, so I have to give it two stars. Think about those with large displays before getting rid of the “window mode” in settings!
  • 64-bit version isn't fully baked

    By ComradeStoli
Great game, but the 64-bit version for macOS Catalina still needs a lot of work. Objects randomly pop-in and pop-out as you zoom or scroll. I am running this on a 2019 15in MacBook Pro with discrete graphics.
  • Too much crap, not enough fun

    By Manomet Bob #6
The game isn't what it used to be. I feel they went backwards with this version.
  • great game but here are a few tips

    By User53106
i love this game it is awesome and so fun to play still i have a few recomendations my. first one is a trapdoor slide for the water park still the water park is already an awesome feature i also think that you should be able to see the park at high high hights and it would rock if you could build rmc hybrids and it woud rock if you could still get a high excitement rating for really tall and fast roller coasters because when. i rode formula rosa it was more fun than scary so mabye make it so you can break limits and still get a popular ride and. i really want catwalks just so rides can be more relistic atill this game rocks and i recomend buying it
  • Broken support (Asypr ticket closed & they never responded)

    By ZoraLink
Can't get ahold of support via their ticket system as it has been broken for weeks.Main Menu is buggy with a 100% CPU usage while idle on the Main Menu (previous version did not have that bug, but does have other in game bugs)
  • New 64 version is terrible

    By RonAnnArbor
This was my favorite game on my Macbook Pro -- with the 64 upgrade 3.3.2, on a top-of-the-line maxed out Macbook Pro, the graphics look terrible. Tracks and scenery randomly 'erase' themselves and redraw themselves as you go. With the 32 version, I seriously thought about not upgrading my OS this fall to keep the game operational. Well, the 64 version now makes no difference. It will work on the new OS, but it looks terrible.
  • The game worked fine before this last update

    By Jamesdusoleil
Since the update a week ago, the game's custom settings was reset, and it doesnt run correctly. The mouse controlls are stupid jumpy. The rides and peeps run smoothly, but when moving the camera the camera moves slow and is very jumpy.
  • Can't see parks??

    By siixco
I love the game, fun and just like the old version, but when I go to load a park, all it says is 'No files found'. Please help! I can't find any of my parks!
