Infernal Views

Infernal Views is the last Challenging Scenario in RCT2, and it is definitely a good one. The goal is to have 10 different types of rollercoasters, each with at least a 6.00 excitement rating. It is a free to enter park and has no time limit. There is a significant amount of area to build the rollercoasters, and the park starts with a Wooden Rollercoaster that has above a 6.00 rating, so you really only need to build 9.

Knowing that building 9 new rollercoasters was going to be expensive, I started off building the standard thrill rides at the park entrance, and then my first rollercoaster as a short shuttle loop, just to get guests into the park and start earning money.

The shuttle loop I built had a surprisingly close to 6.00 rating, so I made note to come back and either build more rides around it, or just add a bunch of scenery. At this point, about halfway through Year 1, I had most of my loan paid off, and had almost 400 guests in the park. I was charging $3 for most of the thrill rides and $5 for the two rollercoasters. This seemed to work out, as the guests would come in with around $60 and that would last them a long time.

Towards the end of Year 1 guests started getting hungry and thirsty, so I built some shops. I also felt kind of sorry for the original rollercoaster, as most of the guests were staying at the front of the park so I built some thrill rides near it to attract more guests.

Even though it is a Water Ride, I decided to build a Splash Boats. It usually had between 100 and 200 guests on it, and I was charging $5 a ride. It had around a 6 excitement rating, and guests love it. It did cost me quite a bit, but these usually only take a few months to earn back all that money, and in a 3+ year game, it is totally worth it. Plus it looks so much cooler with lava as the water!

Anyway, back to completing the scenario. I decided to build another shuttle loop rollercoaster next to the first one to help out the excitement rating, however it was still a bit low, so I put some scenery around them to bump it over the 6.00 minimum. Now I had almost 800 guests in the park, and was earning tons of money. I had 4 rides that were charging $5 each, and now I had a good foundation to build big rollercoasters and start completing the scenario.

Since I didn’t have tons of money yet, I decided to start with the cheaper rollercoasters, and the first one I built was a Junior Rollercoaster. I wanted to keep it in the corner of the park, so I used a lot of helixies. They are very useful for getting a good excitement because they ‘stack’ well. What I mean is that when you add an item near a piece of track (such as scenery, or other pieces of track) the excitement goes up, so if you have a lot of helixies in a row (so they are 'on top’ of each other), the excitement builds very quickly. I tried to do this as much as possible, but still have a few normal style drops. It turned out well, as it was more than the 6.00 excitement minimum. The major downside to doing a lot of helixies verses a lot of drops is that the cost is usually much higher.

I expected to have a little more cash at this point, so I decided to try and make another shuttle loop, this time with the Looping Rollercoaster instead of the Corkscrew. I used the Splash Boats as an easy way to get more excitement, and ran 3 loops instead of the usual 2. This got me just barely over the 6.00 excitement, so that makes 4 out of 10 rollercoasters.

I was a little uninspired, so I decided to build a monorail around the park. It turned out pretty well, however guests weren’t so excited about it. One thing I would do next time is make sure there is only one train per section of the monorail, as most of the trains were empty. Also I think the stations were a little bit too close together, so the ride time needs to be over a minute. However it did help me to section the park better, and a well organized park is extremely important to happy guests and efficient staffing.

Since I had been building shuttle loop rollercoasters, I figured I would just keep doing it, and I built a LIM Launched coaster. Since it can only have one train, I tried to keep the track length to a minimum, but still have enough to have the 6 excitement. 3 loops plus a pair of barrel rolls turned out just enough to do it, but with a very high intensity. Luckily the guests didn’t mind the almost 10 intensity, and neither did the scenario, as long as it’s a 6.00+ excitement it counts. 5/10 rollercoasters.

At this point I was rolling in the dough, with $20k spending cash and 5 rollercoasters left to build. I decided to build a Flying Turns, which turns into a Bobsled Rollercoaster if you use the white paint scheme. It took me a little bit to get this working the way I wanted, and even at the end I could of had it a little bit more efficient. Again, I used helixies to build up the excitement as well as keep the ride compact. Below it I was working on an Inverted Impulse coaster trying to get it up to a 6 excitement while I tested the Flying Turns.

Because the Inverted Impluse Rollercoaster is so limited in track layout, it took a little bit before I figured out how to get it up to the 6.00 excitement. I used the proximity to the Flying Turns as much as I could, and tried to keep the intensity down, however there was not too many options. Eventually I got it just barely above 6, and then made the queue and left it. These are pretty cool rollercoasters, however making them exciting is quite difficult. 7/10 rollercoasters

Scenario 9 Rollercoaster Tycoon

Since I had tons of money, I now got to build anything, I decided to go with the Floorless Rollercoaster. I really like these, because they do not add too much intensity, and have really good momentum. I tried to keep it to just that small rectangle area, and it worked out pretty well. I did have to go underground to have enough room to turn around and get it back to the station, but that allowed me to corkscrew through a previous corkscrew, and get very close to the monorail. The excitement on this one was way above 6, and I was not too surprised, I paid for it. 8/10 rollercoasters.

Back over on the upper left side of the park I tried building a Stand-Up rollercoaster that was all underground, but I couldn’t get it right. The speed just kept being way too high, but just wanted one lift hill in the middle, and not one at the very end to get it back to the station. Stand-Ups usually have higher intensities than floorless, and most other designs, and I was worried about this happening. Luckily I had a backup plan.

The Mine Train is my favorite rollercoaster style in RCT1, and they kind of took some of the appeal away in RCT2 by limiting it it 2 trains. However the way these trains respond to helixies is amazing, and so I just stacked them up and got an easy 6 excitement. The lift hill in the middle was probably one or to units higher than it needed to be, and would of lowered the intensity, but it was all underground, and guests really liked it. 9/10 Rollercoasters

For the last rollercoaster, I decided just to build something really huge, it was the last ride for the park on the last challenging scenario. I really like the Twist style rollercoasters, so I built a Hyper Twist.

While building the ride, I wanted to have most of the ride very close together, so I used helixies and drops to be able to cut through other helixies and drops. At the end I actually was expecting it to have a little bit more speed, so I had to end it with some bunny hills. It was still a pretty fun ride to build, and even with some pretty intense looking G’s, the ratings turned out pretty well.

And mission accomplished! All of the Challenging scenarios completed, which leaves 5 Expert scenarios.

I really liked this scenario, and especially when paired with the previous scenario, Gravity Gardens, is a great way to get good at building rollercoasters, especially the kind of rollercoasters that you aren’t used to building.
