Class this as easily the most bizarre story of the week. Given that even action-packed or narrative-rich videogames are having trouble being turned into good movies, it’s a brave film executive who volunteers the idea that it’s the strategy gaming market where cinematic gold lies. Yet somehow, that seems to be what has happened.
Sony Pictures Animation, it’s been revealed, has picked up the rights to the Rollercoaster Tycoon series of games. You remember them? The ones where basically you had to design theme parks, including customisable rollercoasters? That’s what’s coming to movie screens.
The film is being put in the development hands of Harald Zwart, whose latest project has been directing the remake of The Karate Kid. And the screenplay is being penned by Jay Sherick and David Ronn, who have just penned the script for The Smurfs movie for Sony.
